The Dirty Work: Why Deuce Scoop Exists

Because no one likes smelling it — or stepping in it — or tracking it inside the house.

Our founder, a lifelong dog and cat lover (see stories below), knows firsthand the less enjoyable side of pet ownership: cleaning up poop, dealing with a smelly yard—or worse, a stinky litter box inside the home. Kids can’t play outside. Guests wrinkle their noses. And worst of all—someone steps in it, tracks it into the house, and suddenly you’re scrubbing a long trail of deuces from carpets and floors… and scraping the smelly mess out of the treads on the bottom of shoes.

Deuce Scoop was founded on the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County, California with a clear mission: to improve the lives of pet owners by providing high-quality, reliable pet waste removal services. We understand that scooping deuces is a chore no one enjoys. That’s why we’re dedicated to making pet care easier and more enjoyable for communities across the Central Coast.

Deuce Scoop is a play on the name for the 1932 Ford Coupe, nicknamed “deuce coupe” (with “deuce” being American slang for the number 2, representing the year 1932).  Learn more about the deuce coupe.

Our Founder’s Dog Stories

Our founder has been a lifelong dog lover. Some of his earliest memories are of his grandparents’ beloved dogs: two poodles named Gidget and Boo, a beagle named Ernie, and a quirky mutt with short stubby legs his grandfather jokingly called “Speedy Gonzales Paderewski tall-stuff”—a nod to the Polish pianist. Paderewski was known for his charisma and the way he captivated audiences, especially women. His performances often sparked a phenomenon called “Paddymania,” marked by women’s enthusiastic and often overly expressive reactions to his music and presence. His grandfather would add to his name, “He’s a pee-anist… a ladies’ man and a hooligan… but you can call him Shorty.”

Shorty, true to his namesake, Paderewski, had a favorite “hobby”—humping legs. He also once peed in our founder’s younger brother’s face when they were teens, after his brother made the mistake of lying on the floor. Despite his small stature, Shorty will forever be a legend in the family. 

One of the most memorable moments of our founder’s childhood was when a mixed-breed mutt followed him home—and to his delight, his parents let him keep it. He named him Scratch, because the dog wouldn’t stop scratching. Later, his family had two Labrador Retrievers: a black Lab named Koka and a yellow Lab named Mandy.

As an adult, he’s had several dogs, including his all-time favorite—a Rottweiler. In the spirit of his grandfather’s tradition of giving dogs long, humorous names, he named him “Ottoline (a Catholic priest the family knew) Von Kaiser (a nod to the breed’s German roots) Paderewski… tall stuff… he’s a pee-anist”—but called him Otto for short.  Otto once ate a rat whole at the beach, which required thousands of dollars in veterinary care to remove from his stomach—in case the rat had ingested poison. From that day on, Otto was also affectionately referred to as “Little Rat Bastard,” a nickname that was, of course, added to his full name.  He also had another black Lab named Casey and an Italian Mastiff (Cane Corso) he named “Sophia Potenza del Cavallo Branchiero Siciliano Loren”—Sophia, for short. She was named after the Italian movie star Sophia Loren, with her full name translating to horsepower and nodding to the Cane Corso’s reputation and name among Italian mobsters.

Experience With Large & Powerful Breed Dogs

With powerful large breeds like Rottweilers and Cane Corsos, he understood the importance of proper training and control. He completed formal obedience training with both Otto and Sophia, gaining valuable hands-on experience in managing and caring for strong, intelligent dogs.
